This one may be a slight misnomer. Donatelli is a very common name for a certain type of plant. In fact, it is the official state flower of the state of California. Not that the plant itself is technically a flower, but it is so named because it is a tall, deciduous tree that thrives in the northern California high desert.
Donatelli was once the name of a guy who tried to take out a bunch of kids in a town named San Francisco. The kids were kicked out of the town and his name was taken out. Not sure why he chose the name Donatelli, but it’s pretty easy to see why he decided to take out a bunch of kids in a town like San Francisco.
It’s also not as if this tree is especially rare. It’s been found in multiple states across the country and across the world. I’ve seen it growing in the wild on over 10,000 acres in New Mexico in the last 25 years, and I’ve seen it in the wild here in my hometown of San Diego.
Its also not as if there are only two main types of donatelli trees. The two types of donatelli are called “carnal” and “sacramentarian”. Carnal donatelli trees are found in North America and Eurasia, while sacramentarian trees are found only in North America. We are also seeing more “carnal” donatelli trees everywhere.
I’ve seen both sides of this debate. Some people are saying that the sacramentarian trees are “for the birds”, a not-so-subtle reference to the birds that hang around the trees. Others think that they’re a healthy tree that is just taking up space and can be cut down. That would be the more common view, and if that is what you believe, you can see why.
We can’t really tell whether the tree is the only one that has been cut down or if it just came out of nowhere. We can’t know for sure whether the tree is an amnesiac or a real tree.
