“Information matrices” by David M. G. Frisby is a great book that helps you visualize how information flows through our brains and how the brain stores information and analyzes it. Frisby writes that we have three different ways of “self-awareness:” Self-awareness is the automatic way that our brains scan incoming information and sort it into categories. The second way of self-awareness is when we use our inner ears to listen for and process information.
The third type of self-awareness is when we use our inner eyes to view incoming information that we can see. It turns out that self-awareness through the eyes is what we call the “conventional” kind, while self-awareness through the ears is what we call the “acoustic” kind.
So what do you think the information matrices of the conventional kind look like? Well, the conventional information matrix is a picture of a tree. What happens when you look at a tree, or even a picture of a tree, is that you instantly identify the tree. You see what it is, you hear what it sounds like, and you feel what it feels like. This is what the conventional information matrix is all about.
The acoustic kind of information matrix is more like a word-based map. You don’t see what the tree is, you just know what it sounds like and feels like. In this case, though, it’s a map of the word “tree” and you can see exactly where the tree is in this particular map.
