I have always been interested in the idea of what we mean when we say “self-aware”. I mean, if you are constantly checking yourself for a reaction, what does that mean? Well, it can mean that you are aware of your thoughts, reactions, feelings, and thoughts, that you can control them, and that you are a self-aware person.
My own self-awareness is that I can remember what I read and I remember things I’ve read. I can remember conversations I’ve had, the way I feel, and the general way I am. I’m not aware of my thoughts and reactions, but I can control them and I know what I’m thinking and feeling.
Self-awareness is a bit more complex though, since most of us, ourselves included, don’t have the luxury of getting lost in our own thoughts. But we can actually learn to control our reactions and thoughts. We can learn to be aware of ourselves and then to know what to do in situations where our reactions and thoughts are going to cause us a problem. The most important thing to remember is that we can get lost in our own thoughts, reactions, feelings, and thoughts all the time.
The other main factor in determining whether we are aware of our thoughts, reactions, feelings, and thoughts is our reaction and feeling. We can really get lost in our thoughts and reactions if we are afraid of feeling any of them. For example, if we are afraid of feeling anger, we might not be able to control our anger. In that case, we are probably not even aware of our thoughts and reactions, and so we have to try to control them.
I am not entirely sure how useful this information is. In my experience, what helps most is trying to stay in the present moment. But this is a tough one, because it feels like the more we feel, the more aware we are of our thoughts, reactions, feelings, and thoughts. We might be surprised when we realize that thinking about our feelings is more like thinking about having our hair styled than we thought.
That is not to say that we should avoid thinking about our feelings. It is, as always, important to take every thought and feeling with a grain of salt. But we can be more effective in controlling our thoughts if we get a little more in touch with them. And this is where valuable information comes in.
